Mrs. Martin was born of a distinguished Southern family, her father, Dr. James Kirk of Bluffton, S.C. was of a family who shared the responsibilities of reconstruction after the war and her mother, the former Miss Gabriella Gart(h) of Birdwood, Albemarle County, Virginia, later becoming the wife of the Chancellor of the University of Virginia, likewise shared in rebuilding a war torn country. Miss Lilla Kirk married Col. Thomas Martin, both prominent in social and political affairs of South Carolina. Their hospitable home was always a center of gay and generous hospitality and their lives devoted to their children and the host of friends always with them. Mrs. Martin was buried in their family buring ground Sunday at Bluffton, S.C. Friends from all parts of South Carolina and Georgia paid their last homage to a friend and mother. Unique at this last earthly rite was the singing by hundreds of colored friends and servants of the family, as she was being laid to her last resting place, songs that told of her love and the love that she had for mankind. She will be mourned and missed by all her many friends and relatives. Surviving by several sons and daughters.”
