E "Hamilton Guards" 9th SC Vol. Infantry, which later reorganized into the 11th SC Vol. Infantry. Clarence Kirk was the brother of Dr. John Kirk, owner of Rose Hill Plantation. As a member of the South Carolina Legislature, he is reportedly responsible for preventing the Citadel from being closed after the War Between the States.

The dedication service was held at the Bluffton Cemetery on May River Road near the intersection of Buck Island Road. A reverent program including members of the Kirk family, color guard, honor guard of members of Beaufort’s 11th Vol. Inf. as well as members of Hardee's Guard AL Inf, and music by The UnReconstructed Band.Following this ceremony the attendees retired to the Rose Hill Plantation Mansion (Rose Hill Plantation Community) for the unveiling of a South Carolina Historical Marker that SCV Camp 47 proudly obtained for historical display at the house.

The SOUTHERN CROSS of HONOR

The Southern Cross of Honor was conceived during a reunion of Confederate veterans in Atlanta in July 1898. Only a Confederate veteran can be honored with the Southern Cross of Honor, and it can only be bestowed through the UDC. Money could not buy the Cross; "they were bought by loyal, honorable service to the South and given in recognition of this devotion."

This Maltese cross contains an inscribed wreath of laurel surrounding the words, "Deo Vindice 1861-1965" and the inscription "Southern Cross of Honor" on the face. "Deo Vindice" means "God our vindicator." On the reverse side is a Confederate battle flag surrounded by a laurel wreath and the words "United Daughters of the Confederacy to the UCV."
